Application of Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing for Land and Water Resource Management
During the period of March 12-16, 2018, IWMI-CA organized a training program on application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques for water and land resource management at Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME). This week long event was organized within the framework of USAID PEER Cycle 5 project “Implications of climate change, land use and adaptation interventions on water resources and agricultural production in transboundary Amu Darya river basin” and USAID PEER Cycle 4 project “Mitigating the competition for water in Amudarya River basin, Central Asia by improving water use efficiency”. The goal of the training program was building capacity of human resources in universities and institutes in the region, with a focus on particularly introducing graduate students (both Master’s and PhD) and junior researchers at TIIAME and Centre of Hydrometeorological Service (UZHYDROMET) in Uzbekistan to GIS and RS methods and applications.
The event was kicked off by presentations by the Vice-Rector for Research T.Z. Sultanov and IWMI-CA researchers on the importance of GIS and RS in science and practice, mission and activities of IWMI-CA, progress of ongoing USAID PEER projects, and other relevant topics. The program was conducted in the Uzbek language, and it included several modules focusing on different research methodologies and applications of GIS and RS methods. The event was attended by 15 students and researchers, who were all awarded with certificates for their active participation.
